You complete a fixed amount of work and your score is the elapsed time. Lower is better. It is the oldest scoring format in CrossFit and covers most of the named benchmark workouts, from Fran to Murph.
A time cap exists to keep a class moving and to stop a workout from becoming something it was not designed to be. If you hit the cap, the standard notation is the cap plus the reps you had left, written as something like 20:00 CAP + 12.
Choosing the cap once you are already suffering turns it into a permission slip to quit. Decide it beforehand from the workout, usually somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times the target time, and treat it as fixed.
If you are consistently hitting the cap on a benchmark, the answer is usually to scale the workout so you finish under it. A capped Fran teaches you very little; a scaled Fran finished in 6 minutes teaches you how to pace thrusters.
One limit worth knowing before you start: a browser tab cannot make sound once your phone locks or you switch apps, because browsers suspend background tabs to save battery. For a workout where the phone sits in your pocket or face down on the floor, use the app instead. It keeps the clock and the beeps running with the screen off.
It means the workload is fixed and your score is how long you take to finish it. The opposite of an AMRAP, where the time is fixed and the workload is your score.
In a class setting, yes. Training alone on a benchmark you are trying to beat, an uncapped clock is often more honest, as long as you are willing to accept a bad time.
Fran, Helen, Diane, Grace, Murph and Isabel are the ones you will meet first. All of them are on this site with target times by level.
Browsers suspend background tabs, so a web timer goes quiet the moment you switch apps. The Personal Records app keeps the clock and the beeps running with your phone in your pocket.
