EMOM Timer

A beep at the top of every minute, for as many rounds as you set. The simplest way to run every minute on the minute.

What an EMOM is

EMOM means Every Minute On the Minute. At the start of each minute you perform a prescribed set of work, and whatever time is left in that minute is your rest. Then the next minute starts whether you are ready or not.

The format is self-regulating in a way few others are: the faster you work, the more rest you earn. That makes it excellent for building capacity without wrecking technique, because sloppy reps cost you rest rather than earning you a better score.

How to program an EMOM

The rule of thumb is that the work should take between 30 and 45 seconds of the minute. Under 30 seconds it becomes a rest interval with a token effort in it. Over 45 seconds you start bleeding into the next minute and the whole thing collapses into a continuous grind by round six.

For skill work, aim lower: 3 to 5 heavy clean singles per minute for 10 minutes builds far more than a set of ten touch and go. For conditioning, aim at the top of the range and accept that the last rounds will hurt.

Alternating EMOMs are common and worth knowing: odd minutes one movement, even minutes another. It doubles your effective rest per movement while keeping the total density high.

Sound and the screen lock

One limit worth knowing before you start: a browser tab cannot make sound once your phone locks or you switch apps, because browsers suspend background tabs to save battery. For a workout where the phone sits in your pocket or face down on the floor, use the app instead. It keeps the clock and the beeps running with the screen off.

FAQ

How many rounds should an EMOM be?

Ten minutes is the default and a good starting point. Skill work often runs 12 to 20 minutes at low intensity, while conditioning EMOMs rarely go past 12 before quality falls apart.

What if I cannot finish the work inside the minute?

That is the signal the prescription is too heavy or too long. Cut the reps by 20 percent and continue rather than rolling into the next minute, because once you fall behind on an EMOM you never catch back up.

What is an EXMOM?

The same idea on a longer interval: every two minutes, every three minutes, and so on. Use it when the work genuinely needs more than a minute. There is a dedicated EXMOM timer on this site.

Other timers

Need it to run with the screen locked?

Browsers suspend background tabs, so a web timer goes quiet the moment you switch apps. The Personal Records app keeps the clock and the beeps running with your phone in your pocket.
