Open 16.1 Rx

The Workout

AMRAP 20 mins: 25-ft Overhead Walking Lunge (95/65 lb), 8 Bar-Facing Burpees, 25-ft Overhead Walking Lunge, 8 Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups.

Primary movement: OH Lunge/Burpees/C2B

What is Open 16.1 Rx?

Open 16.1 introduced a movement the Open had never scored: the overhead walking lunge, 25 feet at a time with a 95/65 barbell locked out overhead. Twenty minutes of lunging, burpees and chest-to-bar creates a full-body attrition test where the lunges quietly tax the shoulders that C2B need and the legs that burpees drain. It rewarded the rare athlete whose overhead stability survives constant walking fatigue.

Tips & Strategy

Lock the elbows aggressively and take deliberate, medium steps - a dropped bar mid-lane restarts that 25-foot section. Use a jerk to get the bar up and re-set your grip width before each lane. Burpees at a sustainable step-over rhythm; C2B in quick 4-4 from early on. The lunge lanes are also your breathing pattern: exhale at each lockstep. Twenty minutes is long - target consistent 2-lap cycles and revisit your pace at minute 10.

Scaled & Beginner Versions

Scaled: front-rack or unweighted lunges, regular burpees, jumping pull-ups.
